Establishment of Turtle Hatchery, Protection of Hatching Ground & Release of Hatchling to the Sea

Bangladesh coast is utilized by the migrating marine turtle for nesting. St. Martin’s Island (SMI) is an important nesting site of marine turtles. Marine turtles are endangered globally as its population is declining rapidly. Conservation of marine turtles has been being considered as a priority issue in marine resource conservation. Department of Environment (DoE) has initiated a project “Ecosystem Based Development, Management and Conservation of the St. Martin’s Island Project”. This present assignment is a component of the above mentioned project and intends to conserve the turtle in and around the island. The project is designed to (a) identify and protect  the turtle nesting grounds (a) facilitating hatchling production through ex-situ hatchling production (c ) halt or reduce the threats to turtles and (d) prepare a Turtle Conservation Management Plan for turtle conservation in St. Martin’s Island (SMI).
