Improving Natural Resource Governance for Rural Poverty Reduction (NRG)

Description of Project:

Improving environmental governance to promote fair and equitable access to natural resources and improved livelihoods in Bangladesh. Local communities, with a special emphasis on women, are empowered to take part in decision-making and linkages between community-based organizations and local authorities are strengthened.
Enhanced capacity and skill of both local communities and local government to manage natural resources
Multi-stakeholder platforms (MSP) for negotiation and dialogue set up to improve linkages between local civil society institutions and local government authorities

NACOM Activities :

The project was implemented on two sites: Gopinathpurbeel, Padma-Jamuna-Ichamoti flood plain in Shibalaya and Harirampur Upazilla in the Manikganj district and in the Noli beel, Shitalaxma floodplain in Kapasia Upazilla in Gazipur district. Attempts have been made for natural resource governance in a participatory manner.
Study and document customary practices and rights on natural resource uses of floodplain
Collect baseline data on local wetland resource exploitation, regeneration and utilizations.
Assess capability and capacity building need for local institutions regarding natural resource management and local level governance issues in natural resource management
Development and propose a local level governance regime for the management of local resources.
Conduct capacity building training programs for CBO leaders, public representatives, civil society representatives, local govt. officer and local women.
Demonstrated good governance practices in fisheries resource management through established fish conservation areas in the beels.
Established multi-stakeholder network involving UP, UpazilaParishad, its standing committees, local government agencies, CBOs, NGOs.
