Community Based Flood plain Resource Management under Sustainable Environment Management Program (SEMP)

Description of Project:
Overall objective of the project is to improve the environmental quality of the country coupled with sustainable development, poverty alleviation and capacity building for better environmental management. The specific objectives for the project component are:
Prevent and reverse the trend of wetland degradation
Sustainable use of wetlands resources
Promote sustainable development in the intervention area

NACOM Deliverable

The aquatic habitat survey was restricted to river habitat only. The survey of river habitat will included the parts of the Kushiyara river that consist of the retaining wall as well as the zone (mainly downstream) that is likely to be influenced by the river training activities and as well as due to changes in flow regime, if any
Within the riverine habitat observations were made on the fish diversity, mollusks, prawns and other aquatic animals, including the dolphins. Special efforts were taken to collect information on the foraging, resting and breeding areas within the survey area
The identified river habitat was also checked for the existence of any important fishing ground, fish sanctuary, breeding/spawningv and nursing ground of fish and other aquatic mammals.
Fish and prawn survey was carried out by making observation on fisher’s catch, local fish market survey and interview of local fishers.
Benthic sediment samples were collected from the river bed/bank where the retaining wall was constructed to document the occurrence of the benthic organisms that might be affected due to river training.

Terrestrial Sampling

Formed and organized community groups and build their capacity in CBO and NR management
Collected baseline data, assess socioeconomic development needs and flood/erosion vulnerability
